Don't let stress overwhelm you. While the holidays are a leading factor in stress, they aren’t the only source of stress in our lives. Some say that the three biggest life changes a person can undergo are moving, getting a new job and having a new baby, and they are the changes which also cause the most stress.

Stress affects both body and mind

Stress can be one of the biggest factors in many people’s health problems. Once stress begins to build up, the body is one of the first things impacted. The body often shows the symptoms of stress through:

  • Light-headedness
  • Memory issues
  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches

However, stress also affects the mind. Depression is one of the top symptoms caused by experiencing too much stress and could actually affect the people you are usually surrounded by, too. Stress can also make concentrating difficult, making you more prone to distractions from all angles.

The importance of decreasing stress

Stress often causes negative emotions both for you and for those around you. Though it is often difficult to deal with stress, preventing or decreasing it can help you regain a healthier and better life.

While it is virtually impossible to avoid stress altogether, there are ways to decrease stress in your life:

  • Maintain your blood sugar: The stress cycle can be vicious; ongoing stress can lead to adrenal gland burnout, which could cause fatty food cravings that can lead to serious weight gain, thus causing additional stress. To maintain a balanced blood sugar level, you should create and stick to a healthy diet plan that includes protein, carbs, fat and fiber at least four times each day.
  • Increase vitamin C: While the body already includes a high concentration of vitamin C in the adrenal glands, it is still easy for stress to reduce that level. You can rebuild your vitamin C to help you manage stress by enjoying strawberries, papaya, spinach and tomatoes.
  • Exercise: Exercise is a key factor in reducing and managing stress levels. Exercise releases endorphins in the body that act as natural painkillers – both physical and emotional. Exercise and physical activity can also help you sleep better, which further reduces stress.
  • Learn to say no: We know it’s difficult, but sometimes it’s best to say no to a request or proposition if you think the situation or people involved may negatively impact your health. Take control of your life; you and your family don’t have to attend every function or event. Everyone deserves and needs some down time.
  • Make time to relax: It is important to take time for yourself. This will help recharge your batteries and improve your reaction to future stress.

Though it may be impossible to remove all sources of stress from your life, taking a step in the right direction will help. You may see your health improve after implementing even just one of the above changes.
