Velocity Care listed our top four habits you can have to improve your quality of life. These habits aren’t mutually exclusive; when you implement one healthy habit you improve your entire well-being, and these are healthy habits that benefit all ages.
Sleep is essential to good health. For children, creating a sleep routine ensures they feel rested and productive. For adults, lack of sleep can negatively impact their health, including increasing the risk of issues like obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other heart diseases.
Maintaining a balanced diet improves your physical and mental health. Get in the habit of creating a grocery list and meal plan each week to ensure you consume the proper amount of fruits and vegetables and to help you avoid fast food. Consider including your children in the meal plan to encourage their healthy eating habits as well.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, adults should participate in aerobic activity at least 150 minutes each week and strength training of major muscle groups twice a week. Exercising doesn’t have to be a chore. There are a number of ways to exercise that are enjoyable activities. Exercise boosts your heart health, and because of the endorphins released, it improves your mental health too.

Having regular social interactions helps you stay positive and keeps your mind active. You need to stretch your mind, similar to stretching your body. Your social habits can include connecting with others through relationships and shared interests. Participate in activities you enjoy to keep your brain fresh and have experiences that bring you happiness.

It’s important to introduce children to proper diet and sleep habits so they can carry those with them throughout their lives. If you make exercise fun, your kids will look forward to it. Encourage activities like a family walk every evening or family game of T-ball. Having set play dates and setting aside nights for friends are great ways for children and adults to feel fulfilled in their lives. These tips and habits can be created and sustained at any age – from toddlers to the elderly – and will contribute to a healthy and long life.
