What should I do if I am suffering from heat exhaustion?
It’s very important to treat heat exhaustion quickly to stop this condition from progressing into heatstroke. If you suspect that you are suffering from heat exhaustion, follow these four steps immediately:
- Find a cool place and rest.
An air conditioned building or car is best, but if this isn’t possible, find the coolest spot in the shade. Sit or lie down and rest, taking deep breaths.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
Water and sports drinks are your best choices and will help to restore your fluid and electrolyte levels the fastest. Be sure to avoid all alcohol and caffeinated drinks as these will only cause further dehydration.
- Remove any tight-fitting or heavy clothing.
Tight, heavy clothes can trap heat against the body and prevent the body from being able to cool itself.
- Take a cool bath.
A cool bath, shower or sponge bath will help to bring the body’s core temperature back down to normal levels.
If you have followed these steps and are still feeling ill after 20-30 minutes or if your symptoms are progressively getting worse, seek medical attention immediately. If you have a fever of 104ºF or higher, head straight to your nearest walk-in clinic.
