4 ways to protect your children from sports-related injuries

Prevent sports-related injuries from having a serious impact on your child.Michael had a long day at his baseball tournament in the middle of the summer. After three hours of back-to-back games, he became groggy during his championship game due to dehydration. Because his head wasn’t in the game, he injured himself while sliding into home base.

Children are at a higher risk for injury than adults when it comes to sports like basketball, football, baseball and soccer because they’re still developing and growing. Each year, millions of children receive urgent medical treatment due to sports-related injuries.

As a parent or guardian, there are things you can do to help keep your child safe when out on the field or playing on the court:


  1. Stay up to date with physicals.

A majority of sports teams require an updated physical each season. While life is busy, and it seems tedious to visit the doctor each year, a sports physical is crucial to keep your child safe while participating in athletic activities. These physicals screen children throughout their stages of development to make sure they’re always in healthy condition to play.

  1. Give injuries importance.

While parents might love to see their children getting as much playing time as possible, usually they pick up on signs of an injury immediately. Noticing the symptoms of an injury early on helps your child receive quick and proper treatment, which is essential to preventing further damage. As your child ages, he or she may be more likely to hide an injury from you; be sure to keep the lines of communication open. It’s also extremely important not to rush back to regular activities after an injury. Getting clearance from your health care provider is key before letting your child back on the field.

  1. Stay hydrated and protected from the sun.

It’s possible for children to suffer from heat-related injuries when playing outdoor sports. Doctors recommend that parents apply sunscreen before a game or practice and provide hydration every 20 minutes to avoid dehydration.

  1. Wear protective gear.

As children grow, their bodies are still fragile. Making sure your child has the proper equipment before stepping out on the field will ensure safety during the game. This includes properly fitted helmets to avoid a concussion and other brain injuries.
