What is inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s response to injury. For example, when you cut your finger, the injured area will become red, swollen and warm. What are the symptoms of chronic inflammation?

  • Asthma.
  • High blood pressure.
  • High blood sugar.

Inflammation triggers

There are many factors that can cause chronic inflammation including:

  • Weight gain and obesity.
  • Pollution.
  • High levels of stress.
  • Poor diet.

Foods that can cause inflammation

Food can play a large role in the development of chronic inflammation in the body. A poor diet can lead to chronic inflammation or can make an already existing condition even worse. Foods that should be eliminated from the diet include:

  • Fried, high-fat foods.
  • Foods containing refined flour (e.g., white bread, crackers, cakes).
  • Foods containing refined sugar (e.g., soft drinks, candies, doughnuts, pastries).
  • Highly processed foods (e.g., lunch meats, frozen dinners).
  • Foods high in sodium (e.g., chips, lunch meats, soups).
  • Excess alcohol (recommended amounts of alcohol are not to exceed one drink a day for women and two drinks per day for men under the age of 65, although the less consumed the better).

How to fight chronic inflammation

By taking care of your body you can help to reduce your risk of chronic inflammation and the diseases associated with it. Making appropriate changes in your diet and eliminating the foods that can worsen inflammation is a great start. Replace these foods with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, legumes, nuts and seeds. The results will be less inflammation and a reduction in weight, further lowering your risk factors. Adding good fats, like omega-3 fatty acids, and reducing the bad, saturated fats will also bring about positive effects.

Exercise is also important. Not only will it keep your weight in check, but it will also keep your body functioning properly, while reducing inflammation. Exercise reduces stress, which is a known trigger for inflammation. Studies prove exercise helps people deal with stress more effectively in their everyday lives; this can include yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, tai chi and other types.

As further discoveries are made about chronic inflammation and more information is uncovered, we will be better able to protect ourselves from the diseases caused by this condition.
