What is lumbago?
Lumbago is the medical term for pain that occurs in the lower regions of the back. This condition can range in severity from mild discomfort to a completely debilitating state where regular movement is greatly impaired. A number of things can cause lumbago, such as an accident, a muscle strain, bone problems (like arthritis, osteoporosis or scoliosis) or nerve damage.
Anyone can have lumbago at any age, but it’s most common in those whose work involves physical lifting or strenuous activity and also in elderly people.
What are the symptoms of lumbago?
The symptoms of this disorder vary depending on the severity and the underlying cause of the problem.
The most common symptoms:
- Pain in the lower back.
- Pain that radiates down into the buttocks, thighs or groin area.
- Pain that is worse with movement.
- Difficulty bending.
- Muscle spasms.
- Numbness or tingling sensation across the lower back or down into the legs.
Can I treat lumbago at home?
You can usually treat mild to moderate back pain at home, and symptoms generally subside within a week.
- Pain relief medication, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, can reduce the pain, and over-the-counter muscle relaxants help to stop any muscle spasms or muscle pain that you may be experiencing.
- Heat therapy can also be beneficial. Heating pads and wraps help to soothe sore muscles.
- Keep moving. Staying active as much as possible will keep your body from getting stiff and will keep your muscles strong.
- Get lots of rest to allow your body to heal, and lie on a firm, flat surface for the best back support.
How can I prevent back pain?
You can avoid many cases of lumbago with some simple preventative measures:
- Stay active. Keeping healthy and active will reduce your chances of experiencing back pain and will keep your muscles strong and healthy.
- Use proper lifting techniques. Lift with your legs and not your back. Improper lifting can be very dangerous and is one of the leading causes of back injury.
- Manage your weight. Being overweight can put strain on your back and lead to an increased incidence of lumbago.
- Stretch before and after any strenuous activity or exercise to warm up your muscles and get them ready to work.
When should I see a doctor?
Most cases of lumbago are mild and will usually resolve on their own within a few days. If your symptoms come on suddenly, continue to get worse, or if you’re suddenly unable to control your bowel or bladder or have sudden and severe numbness or loss of feeling in your lower extremities, it’s imperative that you visit your local walk-in clinic immediately. These could be signs of a much more serious condition.
