September is suicide prevention month. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 million people die from suicide each year. While it is difficult to understand what drives so many people to take their own lives, those with suicidal thoughts are in so much pain that they can see no other way to escape suffering that, to them, has become unbearable. Most people who commit suicide truly believe that their loved ones would be better off without them.
Some suicidal individuals give little or no warning signs of their intentions to end their lives. On the other hand, many do give off subtle (or not-so-subtle) signals. The best way to prevent a suicide is to recognize the warning signs and know how to respond if you spot them.

- Having no hope for the future
- Saying goodbye to friends and loved ones
- Withdrawing from others
- Self-destructive behavior
Tips on how to prevent suicide
If you spot the warning signs of suicide in someone you know, talk to him. Ask him if he is feeling suicidal. Sometimes, something as simple as talking to people and letting them express their feelings can provide relief from loneliness and pent-up negative feelings – and may even prevent a suicide attempt.
When talking to someone who is suicidal, it is important that you keep calm and not argue with her. Do not try to fix her depression or give advice. Just listen and be nonjudgmental.
Offer help and support to those considering suicide. Encourage them to seek professional help and to reach out to other people they love and trust.
While helping someone through suicidal thoughts, be sure to take care of yourself, too. Find someone whom you trust to talk to about your feelings and get support of your own.
