Sore Throat

Most sore throats are caused by minor illnesses and go away without medical treatment.

Sore throats can be:

  • Viral
  • Bacterial
Viral infections include laryngitis and mononucleosis. Bacterial infections can include strep throat, tonsillitis, or a peritonsillar abscess.

Treatment

Treatment of a sore throat depends on the cause. Viral infections are the most common cause and are not cured by antibiotics. An over-the-counter numbing lozenge, such as Cepacol, can help alleviate the pain. Cepacol is available for purchase at Velocity Care. Velocity Care can perform a rapid strep test while you are in the clinic to determine if you have strep throat and will need antibiotics.
